The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 912 will sponsor a marble classic at the Post on Decker Drive starting 9 a.m. Saturday for school-age boys up to 14. No pre-registration required. logs may come Saturday morning. At noon participants receive hot dogs. Winners receive trophies from the Baytown Optimist Club and may advance to the District VFW marble tournament May 14 in Houston. Baytown has held district and state titles, with Jerry Hance the reigning champion.
Baytown Chamber of Commerce will mail letters to organization presidents urging cooperation in creating a city community calendar. Eldon Berry, the chamber president, announced the plan at a luncheon and said the calendar will be maintained at the chamber office to record event dates and prevent scheduling conflicts. The goal is 90 percent organizational cooperation to ensure dates are open before events are set.
Pioneer Students will hold a banquet at 7 30 p m Saturday at the Tower with guest speaker W L Grant.
In Houston a 5 year old patient, Marcel L. DeRudder of Westville, underwent a groundbreaking left ventricle support pump implanted at Methodist Hospital. Doctors report the device is doing its job and maintaining blood pressure, but fear possible brain injury pending 12 to 24 hours of further observation. DeBakey led Baylor and Rice specialists in the operation, noting the silicone pump may provide permanent left-ventricle support with improvements.
Houston (AP) Dr Michael Ellis De Bakey, a renowned cardiovascular surgeon, heads a team that implanted an artificial heart. He is prolific, often doing six to eight operations daily, starting at 4 a.m. and sometimes working past midnight, with a 95 percent recovery rate among patients.

Torrential rain and hail lashed West Texas and the Lower Rio Grande Valley causing flooding and property damage. Kermit saw .50 inch rainfall with marble sized hail, windows smashed but no injuries reported. Raymondville and Lyford faced over six inches of rain flooding Raymondville Memorial Hospital rooms and streets. Dairy and crop damage loomed as hail wiped out cotton and grain stands east of Lyford. Temperatures ranged from 47 to 58 degrees with continued showers and thunderstorms forecast.
State Rep Vernon Stewart announced hearings on juvenile crime will be held April 28-29 in Houston by a Texas Legislature committee. Invited are Houston law officers, juvenile workers, judges, and others. attendance requires a written request and remarks. Stewart chairs the statewide hearings to study causes and propose a program for the next session.
U S Marines and South Vietnamese forces pressed a major operation 20 miles northwest of Quang Ngai to trap a combined North Vietnamese Viet Cong regiment. The fight, backed by air and artillery, saw heavy casualties on both sides as rain from the skies reduced ground fire.
Bay town Viet Nam Children's Fund head Jack Arvin reports total contributions of 212.90 to aid Dong Ha radar site volunteers and ship items for servicemen at the Little Alamo near the North Viet Nam border.
