Weekend patrols resulted in multiple drunken driving arrests and traffic tickets issued by county officers. Residents recall police activity as officers stopped motorists Saturday night and issued citations amid ongoing enforcement in the area.
Allied planes shot down seven enemy MiGs and damaged six more while targeting railways, troop installations, buildings, and supply dumps in northwestern Korea. Capt Joseph J. Love, from San Bernardino, California, claimed his fourth and fifth MiG kills, becoming America's 11th jet ace. SAN ANTONIO Gen Hoyt S Vandenberg Air Force chief of staff prepared to hear reports on 13 reserve officers who refused to fly because of family duties and hardship. He flew to Kelly Air Force Base but declined comment as Washington discussed softening the stay down order. Six disobedience charges were filed at Randolph and Mather bases, and Lt Verne Goodwin of Peabody Mass was sentenced to two years for a flight refusal from Briggs Air Force Base El Paso to England.
In downtown San Antonio a 800-pound lioness called Queenie escaped her cage during Fiesta events and roamed the business district for over an hour. Police, animal handlers, and crew used meat lures and long poles to recapture her, with no serious injuries reported except torn trousers and minor scratches. Queenie finally returned to captivity after a tense chase centered at a concession tent near Military Plaza.
Houston area entertainers joined with a local television station to raise 111371 in a 16 hour marathon benefit for the United Cerebral Palsy Association. The program aired on KPRG IV starting at 10 pm Saturday, with many performers moving from clubs to the Music Hall for the event.
The Oklahoma City weather bureau issued a tornado warning for Western Oklahoma and parts of northern Texas. The forecast warned of increasing thunderstorm activity this afternoon into tonight with some storms possibly becoming severe and producing a tornado in the area from Gage Oklahoma to Olney Texas and Oklahoma City to Enid. Expected timing around 2 to 7 p.m. local time.
President Truman urges Congress not to restrict federal funds for running steel mills warning that a ban could paralyze government operations in an emergency. He cautions lawmakers and GOP leaders over demands tied to the wage-price dispute and notes the advisory board’s ongoing mobilization efforts. Local advisors expect an eventual wage increase for steelworkers but do not specify amounts.
La Porte voters go to the polls tomorrow to elect six mayors and two city commissioners. Mercer D Burgin is unopposed for mayor with Harold J Pfeiffer not seeking re election. Three candidates contest the two commissioner seats: Robert A White L R Rigby and Harold P Pfeiffer. Election hours 7 am to 7 pm at City Hall.
In Jackson Michigan more than 2000 inmates rioted at Southern Michigan Prison seizing the south half of the cellblocks. Four guards were held as hostages and 100 troops were sent, with 120 more from the lower peninsula ordered. The riot, the worst in state history, involved 6500 inmates, with armed prisoners and demand for food amid grievances.
Omar Shoemaker of Chambers County filed as a candidate for the Cedar Bayou School Board in the May 3 election. He is a 33 year resident, father of two, a carpenter by trade, and foreman at Maxwell Construction Co overseeing Cedar Bayou School gymnasium library and auditorium work. Incumbent D C Mangum seeks re election while G C Grube has not stated intentions.
Baytown observed San Jacinto Day with a quiet holiday. Stores downtown were closed and most offices idle while Baytonians joined ceremonies at the San Jacinto Battlefield and Bayshore events in Seabrook and Kemah. People heard former congressman Ed Gossett speak and 17 year old Houston girl crowned queen. Lt Gerald M Camp posthumously awarded the Silver Star to his widow at Texas A&M ceremonies. Camp was Baytown born and died in Korea.
Fifteen hundred hardy Americans at Camp Desert Rock near Yucca Flat prepare to move into foxholes ahead of an atom bomb blast. Two hundred twenty paratroopers will ride planes beyond the blast area after exposure, while scientists install instruments in towers and bunkers. Weather is uncertain with showers near Las Vegas.
Baytown Jaycees earned the Geissenbier Trophy for the third consecutive year in the 16,000 to 25,000 population bracket. Houston won the large award. Baytown members received state recognition in Austin with A. S. Bynum named outstanding local president Knox Beavers as outstanding state director and T. E. Cook as outstanding state officer. The chapter entered 21 scrapbooks recounting activities and won 11 awards, eight first places, across Americanism Christmas inter-club relations membership and personnel publications public affairs public health and youth activities. Debate over trophy naming and other state honors followed. The Baytown youth program, Quack, entered at the national convention in Dallas in June. Baytown also took many awards at last year’s national convention.
