Sylvan Beach Pavilion to reopen May 2 with festival dance

Sylvan Beach Pavilion, damaged by Hurricane Alicia in 1983, will resume operations on May 2 during the Sylvan Beach Festival. Festival activities begin with a 10 a.m. parade at South Broadway and G Street, led by grand marshal Robert Foxworth, son of former La Porte residents. The day features entertainment, food booths, a chili cookoff, and beauty contests including Miss and Little Miss Sylvan Beach.

Soviet and U S warn on arms control progress

Washington reports say Soviet and American officials caution that despite progress in drafting an arms control agreement, last minute problems could derail disarmament. Viktor Karpov suggested a Reagan Gorbachev summit may occur later this year if groundwork continues. Proposals include eliminating medium range missiles in Europe while retaining up to a hundred on each side. Verification remains unresolved. Gorbachev also floated removing short range missiles in Europe, drawing NATO and U S concerns over Soviet conventional strength.

San Jacinto Day events planned in Baytown park

Baytown marks San Jacinto Day with a 9 a.m. start and multiple sites in the park including a 10:30 a.m. parade on Park Road 1836 and an 11 a.m. wreath laying at the monument. Lee College Jazz Band will perform aboard the Battleship Texas at 1:30 p.m. and a San Jacinto Day museum display will showcase Charles Shaw paintings. Local descendants groups and San Jacinto organizations are among attendees.

Texas teen stable after shark attack severs arm

A 16 year old girl from Kingsland lost an arm in a shark attack off Mustang Island in Port Aransas. The victim, April Dawn Voglino, remained in serious but stable condition after surgery in Corpus Christi. Beachgoers continued enjoying Easter weekend as officials said the incident appears isolated.
