Grant Gets Second Top UF Position

William Grant Jr. of Humble Oil and Refining Co. plants in Baytown has been named vice chairman of the Baytown and East Harris County United Fund campaign for 1955. At 62, he serves as aide to the campaign, supporting W. J. Strickler. A former Community Chest director and budgeting chair, Grant is a past president of the Texas Society for Mental Health and received the Heart Foundation award in 1954. The Grants reside at 402 Avenue E and have daughter Kathleen, a UT senior.

Public Hearing Planned on Bond Issue for Harris County District 8

A public hearing on a proposed 175 009 bond issue for Harris County Fresh Water Supply District No 8 at Wooster will be held at 7 30 am Thursday at Burnett Elementary School. W M Douglas, chairman, will conduct the hearing. Four city officials including Mayor R H Pruett, City Attorney George Chandler, Councilman Lacy Lusk, and Rufus Bergeron plan deep sea fishing Saturday.

Wooster Boy Named To Attend Jamboree

James Mclean a 15 year old Explorer Post 134 member sponsored by Wooster Baptist church has been chosen as representative of the East Harris county district to attend the International Jamboree in Ontario Canada August 18 to 28 He is one of 11 boys selected from the Sam Houston area council He has been Eagle Scout since 1954 and is active in Troop 134 Robert E Lee High School choir chemistry club and track He will travel from Baytown August 12 with training in Dallas and layovers in Washington New York Detroit and Chicago returning September 1.

Texas Senate Considers Teacher Certificate Codifying Bill

The Texas Senate reviewed a bill recodifying teacher certificate laws but rejected Rep. Burkett Jr’s strikeholder amendment that would permanently revoke certificates of teachers who strike. The House previously blocked the amendment on a 80 vote. The Senate also extended the deadline for a special committee probing the veterans land program to May 20 and unanimously praised Dr. Jonas Salk for his polio vaccine work.

Auto Inspection Deadline Set For April 15 In Baytown

Baytown patrols warn drivers to obtain inspection stickers by April 15. Officers Gooding and Dickerson will patrol state highways and Herrig county into Dayton to ticket uninspected vehicles. Eight New Mercury Vapor Street Lights For Baytown

Baytown will receive eight 15 000 lumen mercury vapor street lamps announced by Houston Lighting and Power Company. Four lamps will go to the Lee Drive Highway 146 area and four to Decker Drive Park and Woodruff vicinity. Installations expected within days after council approved the request at the March 16 meeting. The county funds request for payment was rejected. The new lights offer whiter light and better visibility than standard street lamps.

Prisoners Seen Ready To Negotiate In Texas Sit Down

Fifty two convicts at Huntsville Texas state prison sat in the courtyard overnight and signaled readiness to negotiate or drop their demand for three meals daily. Spokesman Charles E Pierce, a frequent offender, said they were waiting for Father Francis Duffy to join talks. The hunger group began the sit down yesterday and seeks a change from two meals a day in a maximum security block.

California Church Leader To Speak In City Friday

Dr. Glenn Warner Moore secretary of the general council of the Presbyterian church USA will speak at 7 30 p m Friday at a meeting of the Houston Presbytery The dinner will be in the fellowship hall of First Presbyterian church About 40 pastors and delegates from area churches will attend Moore is the administrative officer coordinating the churchs activities He was elected in 1951 with headquarters in New York City He has served in Southern California and abroad including a Philippines Thailand mission study He chaired the World Presbyterian Alliance finance committee and is a director of Presbyterian Life He was born in Missoula Montana and is a 1922 Occidental College graduate with a 1926 San Anselmo Theological Seminary divinity degree.

City approves two week plan to make DeFee a one way

Police Chief Roy Montgomery announced DeFee Street will become a one way eastbound in about two weeks after a traffic study. The council approved a temporary move, with signs arriving in Baytown and motorists warned before implementation. Sterling remains a one way westbound nearby.

Salk Shots Start As 57 Million Children Await Inoculations

United Press reports the first batch of Salk polio vaccines begins with some children already immunized ahead of the nationwide rollout. Florence Budd, chair of the Illinois Protestant Children's Home, secured vaccine after an hourlong dispute with Parke Davis & Co. in Chicago. In Atlanta two four year olds receive doses within hours of arrival. Georgia’s Suzanne Tarleton and Dr. T. K. Lewis inoculate Cecile Lewis. Oklahoma moves to fund free inoculations for nearly half a million youths amid talk of a black market and potential charges for a three shot series.

Baytown Police Sponsor Safety Drive For Good Driving

The Baytown Police Department will run a week long safety campaign with a $5 award to a driver deemed safe. The Disabled American Veterans chapter funds the prizes, and Police Chief W R Montgomery will designate one patrol car to observe safe driving. If the prize winner is under 18, the DAV adds a $10 award. Plans were approved at the City Council meeting. the campaign runs Monday through Saturday.

Strange Radio Disk Baffles AEC Officials

Central City Colorado officials admit they cannot identify a two inch diameter mysterious metal disk found in Lake Gulch south of the mining town. The disk registered over 20 percent radioactivity on a geiger counter and puzzled the FBI, Geological Survey, health officials, and veteran miners. Morris Steen, 30, a millworker for Cherokee Uranium, Inc., found the object in the gulch.

City Council weighs fire zone changes in Baytown

Baytown City Council on Thursday night studied a request to remove land between Airhart drive and Goose Creek from fire zone number two to allow Krizak Monuments to expand using nonconforming materials. A committee will study the issue and report next meeting as council also agreed to extend fire zone to include part of Alexander Drive area despite one objector.

City Skies Clear as Rain Recedes in Baytown

Baytown had drying conditions Thursday after near four inches of rain earlier in the week totaling about 30 inches from Friday to Tuesday. A Tuesday cloud burst dropped 1.03 inches, with cooler 51 degrees overnight and a 48 degree high earlier. Forecast called for a 70s high and partly cloudy skies into Friday as warmth returns.
