Rule of Eleven guides defense against no trump deals
The Rule of Eleven helps third hand defend on trick one by measuring higher cards left when the lead is fourth highest. In a spade sequence, East counts four spades higher than the seven and uses dummy and his own holdings to force a four-trick defense. The Rule dates to 1890 in a Foster letter and was independently found by E M F Benecke.
