Origin of yellow ribbons and the prodigal tale
A 1949 western film title inspired by the song Round Her Neck She Wore A Yellow Ribbon links yellow ribbons to the Civil War by a tenuous thread. The piece traces a folk tale of a released convict seeking signs of welcome via white ribbons on an apple tree, a story appears in Curtis Bok 1959 Star Wormwood and has circulated in religious and youth circles, with 1971 Pete Hamill noting an oral tradition of a bus trip tale involving a yellow handkerchief.
