Rutgers coach Mike Rice era ends amid public backlash
Arkansas Times columnist Gene Lyons reflects on the Rutgers firing of basketball coach Mike Rice after ESPN footage showed him shoving players and using slurs. He argues coaches in big programs face relentless public evaluation, big salaries, and high pressure, and notes the role of athletics in American universities while comparing past figures like Bobby Knight and Duke's Krzyzewski. Lyons questions reader perspective, highlights the culture of college sports, and contrasts academic life with showbiz-like pressures.
