The 18th Annual A J Matthews Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit the Baytown Police D A R E program will be held May 4 at Evergreen Point in Baytown. The City of Baytown will run a Youth 3 on 3 basketball league this summer with a 10 game double header schedule on Saturdays. Boys and girls divisions for 3rd grade to 12th grade for the 2007 08 school year. Games at Pumphrey Elementary outdoor courts. Entry fee 35 dollars includes T Shirt. Registration deadline Friday April 27. Practice begins the week of May 7 with games starting June 2. Pre registration is required and league size is limited. Sterling Lady Rangers clinched a playoff berth in District 21-5A with a 9-0 victory over Atascocita. Senior pitcher Jenny Smith threw a two-hitter and hit a first inning solo homer to move RSS to 20-10-2 overall and 9-3 in district, likely finishing third. Smith and teammates produced a five-run fifth inning, capping the win as RSS prepared for the postseason.
Lee scored three runs in the first inning and edged Sterling 5-1 in a key District 21-5A baseball win. Kyle Bieschke pitched a complete game allowing five hits and one earned run with eight strikeouts. Colton Pitkin took the loss, surrendering unearned runs amid four Sterling errors.
Sterling moved into the 21-5A semifinals on day one at the district tennis meet. RSS returns both boys and girls doubles teams, plus mixed doubles, with several players advancing including Janell Jagnanan and Rachel Gardner in mixed doubles and Kaitlyn Walker in girls singles. The 21-5A meet resumes at 8:30 a.m. with additional rounds.
Baytown Sterling graduate Kirbina Lewis wrapped her Texas A M Corpus Christi basketball career and eyes a pro path, ideally in Europe. The 5 foot 6 guard earned Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year honors, finished with Islanders records of 252 steals and 502 assists, plus 1,270 career points. She says her career is not over and has spoken to several teams as she pursues professional play.
