The city hires Clinton Owsley to aid in reviewing proposed jumps from 7.75 to 12 dollars for one party business lines and 2.64 to 4 dollars for four party residential lines, while citizens led by W B Reichart protest the hikes.
Sen. Robert A Taft claimed a decisive Illinois victory in the Republican presidential primary with a six to one lead over Harold Stassen. Eisenhower trailed in third with weak write-in support. Kefauver won the Democratic ballot unopposed, Stevenson a weak write-in showing for governor. Taft secured at least 40 of 50 GOP delegates with Illinois backing. Stevenson praised voters but did not announce his national bid.
Mr and Mrs Hirey Clark of Busch Terrace lost their home and all furnishings yesterday afternoon when a fire destroyed the structure. Loss was about 5 000 with insurance. Firemen and three trucks fought the blaze as two small children were feared trapped, later found safe. A neighbor warned others as the interior burned, and Fire Chief Lintelman was injured by hot tar. The home held three valuable violins a guitar a record player a public address system four expensive guns and ammunition. A small dog suffocated under a bed in the flames.
Elroy Clark’s four room home burned yesterday after six years of labor and savings. Baytown Refinery utility co workers organized a rebuilding drive headed by Jack Matthews pledging about 200 dollars. Some 15 to 22 carpenters and craftsmen planned to assist as Clark supports four kids and a family of six.
DENVER Two planes carrying 12 persons were missing near Denver as a snowstorm hampered search efforts. An Air Force B-25 with 12 aboard disappeared 25 miles east of Denver en route from Kansas City. Another plane piloted by Captain Sidney L Harrison from Colorado Springs to Denver was last reported over Castle Rock. A Japanese airliner with 33 passengers and a crew of four crashed into the sea off Japan southwest of Tokyo. Survivors were reported by a Navy minesweeper but unconfirmed.
Baytown area churches join in the fourth annual Faster Sunrise Services in Memorial Stadium. East Harris County Council of Christian Laymen leads with the Robert E. Lee Band under J C Burkett. Rev. Paul Stephenson delivers the invocation. The Robert E. Lee Choir sings as Rev. Walter Bailes and Rev. A Le Jordan present scriptures and sermons.
Eston Williams, 17, of West Bay town, qualified as hunter of the year after killing a nine foot alligator weighing over 200 pounds in a pond near Burnet Bay. He and companions Louis Cansat and Knute Blomstrom Jr. hunted after reports of a prior shooting, with Eston using a 12 gauge shotgun to deliver two direct head shots. They plan to skin the animal and may sell the skin with guidance from Babe D Badgely on skinning.

Goose Creek Independent School District only grants a one day Easter break, unlike Cedar Bayou Crosby and Mont Belvieu districts which close Friday and Monday for Easter and a following San Jacinto Day. Goose Creek students including Lee College return to class after Friday with San Jacinto Day, April 21, also a holiday.
An earthquake shook Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, Texas and Missouri causing tall buildings to sway up to six inches. In Wichita Falls several towers rocked for minutes and windows shattered in places. Dallas, Enid and Henryetta felt tremors with dishes rattling and telephones ringing. No serious damage or injuries reported.
Andy Bargainer says a public hearing on Lakewood joining Harris County Fresh Water Supply District Eight will be Monday at 7 p.m. at David G. Burnet Elementary School. Fifty-one area residents petitioned annexation. the plan is seen as a formality with improvements yet to be mapped, two more meetings planned before a full program is ready for Monday’s presentation.
Paris AP reports Premier Antoine Pinay won 10 confidence votes as France's 1952 budget cleared the way for full participation in Western European defenses. The defense heavy plan aims to curb rising living costs by trimming food prices and pursuing tax evasion reforms, with Pinay meeting cabinet to finalize orders.
Members of the Lakewood Civic Association voted to beautify a 21 acre tract deeded by Gene Muller for a park at Briarwood and Winkler Drive near 150 homes.
