HOUSTON AP Haskell Earp, who survived 65 hours with a mechanical heart, developed pneumonia after receiving a second human heart in his 19th transplant at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital. The hospital bulletin noted a pneumonia patch in the right lung and low kidney function. doctors hoped medical management would help. Cooley said the six men previously predicted artificial hearts would not be practical, calling this the artificial heart and noting it buys time for a human donor. There was a 30 percent chance of failure for the emergency use device during a Friday operation.
