Pvt Charles Morton of Baytown, initially thought lightly hurt, has brain concussion and multiple injuries and has been transferred to a San Antonio base hospital. Pvt Robert Burl Walters and wife Anna remain in Columbus hospital in serious but improving condition, with both legs broken and other injuries. Miss Rena Orrell suffered minor bruises. The group had been en route to Lackland AFB after the accident near Columbus at 2:30 a.m.

Oil activity in Wynnewood addition resumed Thursday as four new oil wells were permitted. Mayor Pruett and the City Council, voting unanimously, approved the four permits amid protests from residents citing property damage and higher costs. Counciman Campbell defended the $500 per well fee as covering strond damage, while Carter argued residents oppose further off activity in the area.
A Japanese tuna vessel Shoho Maru returned home outside the Marshall Islands danger zone after the second hydrogen test. Japanese health authorities banned the entire 30 ton catch from sale as Geiger counters detected alarming radiation levels. The ship’s crew were unharmed, unlike the earlier incident with another vessel.
J. W. Morrin, 25, jailed again on two forgery charges after a spree 15 months ago in Baytown. Known as the will o the wisp, he forged checks to cash nearly 20 hot checks, bought a 410 shotgun using Edward Soileau and B C Potter signs, pawned the guns in Houston, and faced Deputy Sheriff Brown. Morrin previously worked on North Main Street and frequented downtown cafes while his identity went unrecognized despite posted descriptions. He hinted at returning to his old Huntsville job if convicted quickly.
Carolyn Sue Haacke nine-year-old daughter of Mr and Mrs George W Haacke of 016 South Fourth La Porte was riding a bicycle when she rode out of a driveway into the street and was struck by a car driven by Gerald H Conner 29 of Crosby on the way to work in Texas City. The accident happened about 730 am Thursday. Baytown police chief Walter Roberson said a hearing on the accident will be held in corporation court at 10 am Saturday. The car was not damaged and the bicycle was only slightly damaged.
