A complete artificial heart made of fabric and plastic functioned today in the chest of 47-year-old Haskell Earp, the world’s first recipient. Dr. Denton A. Cooley led the team at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in Houston, and the device will be used until a human heart donor is found.
