Eight candidates vie for three city council seats in a low key campaign ending Tuesday. The contest features little controversy with posters as the main display. Incumbent Allen Cannon of District 5 runs unopposed for a full term. Polls open 7 am to 7 pm with results by 9 pm.

Saigon reports the U S Military Command says more than 2 080 American troops will be phased out as part of Nixon withdrawal program. Total U S strength in Vietnam sits just under 190 080 and declines about 1 090 per day. Nixon orders cut to 9 088 troops in 30 days.

Shrine Parade Set for April 8 Led by Baytown Lord

James W. Hughes Potentate of Arabia Temple Shrine will lead the Baytown Shrine Club parade starting at 2 30 p m on Saturday April 8 The event opens the 29th annual crippled children's pageant at 7 p m that night at Robert E Lee High School auditorium Dave Sherron pageant chair says Ross Sterling High School and Horace Mann Junior School bands and other entries will join Shrine units from Houston including the drum and bugle corps and the Motorcorps Tickets for the pageant are 1 each and can be bought from any Shriner or at the door Proceeds benefit the Shrine Crippled Children's Hospital in Houston Baytown children have received treatment there The first Shriner hospital opened in 1822 and 18 more have since been added plus three Shriner Burns institutes including Galveston M L Griffith is president of the Baytown Shrine Club.

Voting In Regents' Race Slow

Slow turnout marked the Lee College regent race with only a small fraction of the 1,700 voters casting ballots in several precincts. Reports from Precincts 100 13 32 149 and 250 note low four hour tallies and scattered results as eleven candidates vie for the three at large seats.

Sun Staffers Sweep State Contest Awards

Sun staffers collected 191 awards in the state contest and earned several first place honors. Glenn Piennig won for feature stories on food and home items plus fashion photography, Audrey Maeser for radio and library promotions, Muril Hart for an editorial on a school board dispute, Mrs. Hemphill for a feature on Rosemary Kent and for fashion coverage, Mrs. Orton for pollution articles and a Lumus Dodge fire photo, with third place given to several others. National winners will be announced at a June awards banquet in Seattle during the National Press Women's convention.

Banquet Speech By Sen Barbara Jordan Set For Baytown

State Senator Barbara Jordan of Houston is the main speaker at the Baytown Human Relations Council banquet April 1 at the Baytown Community Building. Tickets are $3 and sold by HRC members. reservations via Frank Hinds or Nancy Neavel. She runs in the May 6 Democratic primary for the 18th Congressional District against Curtis Graves and others. Jordan, from District 11 since 1956, is noted as a pioneer black woman state senator and first to preside over a Texas Senate and chair a major committee.
