The Baptist Student Union at Lee College sponsors a chili supper to raise funds for the summer mission program. The event runs from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Student Center, 600 W. Republic. Donations are $1 each.

A blaze at the Texas and Pacific Railroad shops in Marshall caused about 5 million dollars in damage. An explosion preceded flames tearing through the brick structure, with several smaller blasts. The cause was undetermined. The once large shop employed hundreds, now reduced by Consolidations. Rail cars inside were lost as the roof collapsed.
Bill Laughlin resigns as Baytown city attorney after serving since January 1968 to enter private practice at 1003 Polly. He will assist on unfinished cases and remain as city attorney until a replacement is appointed, with a salary of 14,148 plus 150 monthly travel allowance this year. Applicants have been approached as the city manager seeks a successor.
Crosby School District and the City of Mont Belvieu seek voter approval for bonds on Saturday with polls open 7 am to 7 pm. Crosby faces a high school bond and rival trustee slates. Mont Belvieu seeks a 415000 water sewer bond. Barbers Hill votes include incumbents and Beach City will poll for the first time. Turnout is expected high with 1500 to 2000 voters likely in Crosby area.
Baytown plans two federal funded community centers to serve public housing at DeZavala Courts and Edison Courts off West Texas Avenue and Highway 146. The facilities will become city property, include meeting rooms, kitchens, a library, and nurse headquarters, with bids opened within 30 days.
