The Bayard News is a weekly paper published every Wednesday evening in Bayard Iowa. The record notes K Heiland and Kenneth Robiston as publishers and lists the Bayard post office as the mailing location.
A wartime letter from Tine in Hawaii dated March 16 1942 mentions fellow servicemen Leonard Bucklin and Jack Duffy in the navy and Jack Stiles learning to fly. The writer notes reading Ken’s paper, gratitude for Xmas cards, travel to Honolulu, Y M C A photos, and a sunset over Diamond Head while urging the recipient to say hello to the brothers and stay well.
The Church of Christ announces a Bible school at 10 with the study topic The Transfigured Christ Meets Human Need. Morning worship follows at 11. Evening services at 8 and junior endeavor at 7 15. Palm Sunday confirmation on March 29 at 10 30, with Good Friday April 8 and Easter April 5 services at 10 30 and Easter morning Holy Communion.
Mrs. Sidney Phelps Mrs. A F Wetzel and Mr and Mrs Guy Ford attended the Guthrie County Farm Bureau achievement day at Guthrie Center on Thursday March 19 1942. Paul Wilson county agent gave an inspirational address.
Smith county provident gave an address while Mize Phipes judged exhibits. Highleod Orange townships rated excellent for booths and publicity. Lige Carrick visited Guthrie Center Monday. The Farm Bureau met Mrs. Lester Christensen March 17 for an all day session with a Food for Victory lunch. Guests shared talks on home safety and cereals in the diet, plus a health discussion. Attendees included Mrs. Rumer Brutsche, Miss Carrie Neal, Mrs. Roy Ocheltree, and others. An operetta in Bayard Friday night drew attendees from area families. Various social events followed, with visits, showers, and dinners chronicled including Mrs. Agre’s shower and local gatherings at several homes.
Here And There reports Sunday dinners at the Wm Halligan home with Mr and Mrs Ed Delaney of Stu art and Claire Crosier visiting Tommy Murrane who has mumps. The Boots family from Cherokee and Des Moines guests visit parents and attend Mary Morgan’s funeral in Guthrie Center.
Prescott who visited in Bagley last week. Graf was home on a navy furlough and will enroll in bombing school after returning to Washington. He is a chief petty officer, the highest rank for a non commissioned officer. Several local residents and families are listed as visitors or callers in Perry, Bayard, Jefferson, Coon Rapids, Des Moines, Guthrie Center, and Scranton over the weekend and Sunday.
