Icy Road Causes Two Car Crash at Route 141 Corner
Patrolman reports icy roadway at the Herndon corner on Route 141 led to a two car collision around 5 30 pm December 26. Everett Cain of Herndon, driving a Custom Farm Service pickup eastbound, attempted a left turn into Phyllis Mae Lynch of Jefferson driving a Cadillac westbound. Damages totaled 250 to the pickup and 475 to the Cadillac with no charges filed.

Troy Lloyd Hawkins long time Bayard resident and former barber and machine shop operator died December 25 1968 in Thomas Rest Haven Coon Rapids. Funeral services were held December 27 at Starling Funeral Home Bayard with Rev Ora Reep officiating. Highland Cemetery burial followed. He is survived by his wife Flossie two sisters and two brothers.

Sage Receives 30 Days For Driving With Suspended License
Kenneth Sage of Bayard was arrested December 7 for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license. He pleaded guilty before Judge Hobart E Newton and was sentenced to 30 days in the county jail, with release planned this weekend after already serving time.

Two Men Die in Central Railroad Train Wreck
Thomas Holland aged 53 an engineer on the fast freight and Melvin L Montang aged 52 a brakeman, both from Perry, were killed in a CR train crash. Montang was found in the lead power unit wreckage and Holland’s body lay about 100 feet west along the tracks. Holland formerly lived in Jamaica.

Bayard Chorale Plans Daytime and Evening Concerts
The Mid-America Chorale, funded by a federal grant and based in Sac County schools, presents a four part program in Bayard. Director John Dexter also serves as organist and choirmaster at two Des Moines churches. A 1:30 pm daytime concert at Bayard School is for Junior and Senior high students, with afternoon demos for elementary grades. The 7:30 pm public concert in the school auditorium has no admission charge.

Captain Mathews from Norton Air Force Base California and Mrs Mathews visited Bayard Iowa for the holidays on December 24. They traveled with Wilford Mathews Sr of Mount Ayr to pick up L L Karber in Jefferson and take him to Mount Ayr. Karber is Mrs Mathews' father. Captain Mathews, a navigator, will be transferred to Vietnam next spring. The Mathews family previously lived in Bayard. Wilford is a Bayard High School graduate.

Ira Palmer 80 Dies in Des Moines Hospital
Ira Adelbert Palmer, a Bayard native and patriarch of a pioneer Bayard family, died at Lutheran hospital in Des Moines at age 80 after a month in care. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 pm at Bayard United Methodist Church with Rev Ora Reep officiating. He was born November 11, 1888, married Charlotte Huss on August 4, 1909, and is survived by nine children, 12 grandchildren, and 22 great grandchildren. Florence and Harold and his wife preceded him in death. The body rests at Starling Funeral Home.
