Community urged to fund and plan a reception and banquet for Baxter Springs volunteers off to war. The News calls for immediate action to organize a meeting, raise funds, and honor local men leaving for service in a foreign land.
A Lucky Bob Mining Company lease three miles southwest of Baxter Springs in the Quapaw district reports a cave or string of caves lined with nearly pure lead and zinc. Three drill holes over 300 feet found subterranean openings. A shaft and drift exposed rich ore lobes and a floor fully ore laden. one hole showed fifty feet of lead ore.
A second hole is being drilled on the Chubb land about three miles east of here by a signing company this week. The first hole yielded a rich ore run at the 303 foot level with an assay of 19 percent.
New Mining Odie notes H. H. Halesell and associates have run considerable mining ventures and that Hale, a firm believer in Baxter Street, has invested heavily in local real estate, signaling conviction in the city’s future.
A new strike at Hartley 40 west near the limit shows a rich vein. Ore was encountered at 218 feet with paving ore, the drill remaining in ore until 241 feet, and the ore body appears to trend from south southwest to north east.
Three drill rigs operate on a 40 acre site as county commissioners call for Incorporation Election on the Qua paw- Quapaw question. Frisco Mining completes first shaft on Minnie Connor Clabber land four miles south of Baxter Springs where ore was reportedly encountered.
The Hannibal and St Joe mines five miles south of Baxter Springs, once productive, are being reopened after a general plant remodel. The 300 ton cyanide mill is now owned by Tom Franks and Ray Hornaday of Joplin Missouri.
Strikes of lead and zinc north of Crestline five miles north of Baxter Springs trigger a mining surge in Cherokee county with 20 rigs in a new field. Ore faces of 20 24 and 15 feet were found at depths 130 196 and 85 feet with assay up to 18 percent. The ore chain possibly links Lawton Picher and Baxter Springs.
Mrs L Wright and Mrs Susie Barber of Webb City were badly hurt in a collision between a Ford and a Buick last Monday morning on Military road two miles north of Riverton. Porter Clark Jr reached the scene in 14 minutes. Mrs Wright was taken to Jane Chinn hospital Webb City and Mrs Barber to St John Hospital Joplin.
The Miami Zinc and Lead company holds a ten year lease for a mine ten miles southwest of Banter Springs in the Commerce district. The lease includes a 20 percent royalty and is described as a continuation of a prior arrangement. The Emma Gordon is listed among properties under the current lease.
A 200 ton mill project in Sunnyside Oklahoma aims to revive mining activity. The Crescent Lead & Zinc Corp plans a two unit mill costing over thirty dollars, with equipment for tailings reprocessing and sludge handling. Construction targets October 1 with operation by January 1918. Additional Crescent mills and leases totaling hundreds of acres near Sunnyside are anticipated.
Farmington mill project in Missouri advances rapidly as the mill and its associates show strong interest in developing a local mine. The venture focuses on expanding ore processing capacity and securing resource rights in the area.
An explosion on a drill rig boiler near the Blue Moons west of Baxter Springs last Friday burned two men Congdon and Easley. Congdon feared boiler failure a day earlier. Oneten was burned across the chest to the abdomen while Easley suffered facial burns. Both were treated locally and at St Johns in Joplin and are recovering. J C Treece and James K Kidd, recent surface buyers on the Danes 80 acres adjoining Hocker, plan platting the tract into homes and business lots near a new smelter site with expected rapid development.
The Standard Zinc and Lead Mining Company moves the Vesuvius mill from the C field to the Tar River area and plans to enlarge it to handle 250 to 800 tons daily. Ore in the new field is heavier. drill holes show faces 30 to 60 feet thick with assays from 7 to 27.4 percent. A 450 foot air compressor is in use. two derricks and two shafts are under construction. M. W. Eardley oversees reconstructions.
Mars mill nearly finished under Merrill mining body ownership at 19 percent. The facility features a 45 foot shaft face connected by tram, a 462100 square foot room, 18 screens and doors, and an outer enclosure 307 feet in circumference. Two 100 horsepower piles will power the operation.
The Reciprocity Club gathered at Mrs Edward Polster home last Friday with members including Mrs Boswell Dr See Mrs Cardin Mrs Covey Mrs Gilman and others. Officers elected were President Mrs Minnie Youse Vice President Mrs Jennie Polster Secretary Mrs James Hartley. Boswell and Reddy helped serve a luncheon. Next meeting set for October 5 at Mrs George Rucker home. Navy League meets Monday at 3 with Mrs Sidney Davis. all members requested to be present.
A 30 acre tract in the Quapaw district four miles south of Baxter Springs near Ashbury interests yields 37 percent ore and is taken by a new mining company. Key figures include Knox and Enfield of Oklahoma City, P. M. Pearce and F. R. Bichell of Duluth, with active development plans. A county social at Goodeagle hall drew diverse attendees including Miss Mary Louise Jackson and Clarence Sloane of ace, Howard Halsey and Hugh McCammer of Miami, and many Baxter County residents.
The purchase ends the stock ad and business tie up of J J Nesch of Pitts and Bob Nesch. The new owners plan an immediate takeover and seek skilled workers. Miami syndicate reportedly seeks drill rigs and related equipment.
The council approved an ordinance authorizing a main sewer system and a follow up order for lateral lines all by unanimous vote. Bonds may be issued for trunk line construction at about 30 000 dollars to be paid by the city. A water franchise was granted to J H Havens and J G Stevens to buy out the current system and expand to meet city needs.
A shaft is being sunk and a mill planned on 20 acres southwest of Baxter 5 in the St. Louis district. The land, held by Etene Hs a erenee, will be thoroughly prospected after ore bodies were found in 14 holes, with ore grades from 110 to 180. A second shaft will be sunk during mill construction. Investors include George H. Glade, his son George H. Glade Jr., William Glade, and Adam Scott.
Jaqueth and Gilman plan a new two story block on Military street to serve as their Ford Service station. The ground floor will be a sales room and ladies’ rest room, with a back work room on the second floor and an elevator for car access. The front upper rooms will be offices and they will move from their current site by March first, leaving the present place for farming implements.
Old resident W. A. Adama is referenced in local chatter about neighborhood greetings during the week. The note suggests familiarity and continued presence in the town, calling attention to his long-standing residence and daily interactions.
