The Red Cross operates across France and Europe with extensive relief funds and hospital support. Within Kansas City a sewing room in the Public Library is readied to house donated machines for wartime work, while national figures detail millions spent on hospital care, ambulances, and famine relief.

Other certified Baxter Springs men await military service, and a petition by about one tenth of voters is with Clerk O M Spratt, action possibly by city council within 10 days, with October election date pending.
An enthusiastic Sept. 15 meeting hosted by Miss Ruth Barnes organized the Delphian M G Chur chapter. Officers elected include President Mrs. Merton Goodeagle, Vice President Mrs. Nancy J. McNeill, and Secretary Treasurer Mrs. Fred J. Malloch. The Isis Delphian Club adopts bylaws and plans biweekly meetings, with several committees established.
A damaged dispatch notes Mission Mill will continue operations at the old site after a fire damaged the face of the mill and caused temporary closure. Officials said production would resume with minimal downtime and safety checks underway.
Cherokee County Sunday School Convention met in Baxter Springs over Thursday and Friday with delegates from nearly a dozen towns. A fall program was planned and Columbus will host next year. Officers elected: President F C Armstrong Vice President W N Taylor Secretary and Treasurer Miss Sadie Nice all of Columbus.
Drafted Men to Judge J. H. Ellis invites Baxter Springs to a patriotic send-off Thursday evening. From 7:00 to 7:45 p m a supper is planned for drafted men only at the Christian church. The remainder of the evening features a big rally with speeches and a free outdoor band concert. Bax terites are invited. Wanted Sight or ten drill rigs are wanted by the Miami Zinc Syndicate.
A sharp oil discovery near Baxterings adds to rich ore finds in the Stebbins mining area. Reports say drilling reached 300 feet with oil bearing sand and blackened gear. three holes yielded ore in the first two, while the third showed strong oil and jack. leases held by J. W. Cox Columbus Kan Harry Sparks Tar River and Crawford Daniels Yeargain Miami.
Ed J. Dardene site two miles south reports two ore bodies in the same hole with zinc at 115 feet and a second at 125 to 135 feet. Turner land holes southwest of Baxter Springs show one low grade ore and a second with 27 and a half percent. third hole poorer than second. Drilling to continue for a fourth hole on the 40 acre Harry Abram land three miles south of is underway.
A 60 foot face of ore eight miles west of Baxter Springs on the Stur at Hamilton lease was found last week. Some cuttings assay 50 percent. experienced miners expect an average around 15 percent. Drill entered ore at 70 feet and ran to 120 feet. first hole on the lease, prospecting to continue. J E Head of Tulsa, owner of the Roanoke lease, and Hea Zine Co plan a plant. two new shafts are sinking ten miles southwest of Baxter.
A strike on the Bingham farm south of Baxter gs near the state line Oklahoma reports unusually good ore. At 175 feet shines were found, at 192 feet drill reached rich ore nearly pure, and at 204 feet the drill again entered shines.
The Big Lead Mining Company starts drilling its second hole five miles west of Baxter Springs on Chubb land. The first hole yielded rich lead dirt at 303 feet with an assay showing 19 percent mineral content.
Burton and Setser expand operations with a 40 cc addition and new 600 pound trip hammer, tables, and machinery to support drill production. Baxter Springs prepares to host drill personnel as ships arrive in 30 to 40 days. Hockerville School enrolls 30 pupils under Mrs Helen A. from Town now at Hockerville. Six months comprise the school year. Attorney Charles Stephens of Columbus visited Baxter Wednesday. Classified ad notes a boy wanted to learn office work in Baxter Springs News office.
