Notice warns dog owners that unpaid dog tax by June 1 leads to impoundment and a three day period before death. Impounded dogs incur a fifty cent fee plus license. To save their dog, owners must obtain a tag from the city clerk or Henry Hoxton, City Marshal.
F H Seeley of Chicago and Philadelphia, a renowned truss expert, will stay at the Connor hotel in Joplin only June 1 2 and 3. He promotes the Spermatic Shield Truss claiming immediate relief and closure of rupture in about ten days, citing awards in England and Spain and offering free demonstrations, especially for charity cases.
At an adjourned board meeting last Tuesday, the district named its next term teachers. Superintendent John W. Twente of Belton Missouri will lead, Miss Anna B Sutherland of Muscatine Iowa is principal, with Rene Roberts teaching 7th and 8th grades. No election for 6th and 7th grades, Winnie George will teach 5th grade, Anne Stewart 4th grade, Chambers 3rd grade, Birdie Bennett 1st and 2nd grades, and Chas Yeager for the Colored School. Dr A J Thompson resigned from the board and Mrs A L Harvey was elected to fill the vacancy until August. New members will take office then as well. The board is reviewing a needed heating upgrade for the high school.
A dwelling occupied by Eugene Foster in Columbus burned on Tuesday morning. Foster died inside the burning building while his wife and child escaped to the door. Sheriff Martin and the Columbus fire department found his charred remains after the fire began early.
Robert James was captured in Fort Scott by Frisco special Agent John Parham on a burglary warrant. He allegedly broke into the Frisco freight depot a week ago, stealing two whiskey cases. Marshal Horton escorted him to the county jail, where he pleaded guilty and was sent to the state reformatory due to his 18 years.
Citizens condemn merchants for blocking sidewalks with goods displays wider than two and a half feet. They urge city officials to enforce the ordinance and halt daily breaches at once.
Memorial Day closes the library all day May 30 as Baxterites recall Booster Day events from last Saturday. Frank and Clarence Lickiss from St. Johns Kansas visit their parents E C Lickiss and Mrs L M Perkins returns home from Webb City where she has stayed at Jane Chinn hospital and is improved. Residents wonder when a good old-fashioned two or three day rain spell will arrive to ease the drought.
