Quaker Valley field to gain first mill as ore shafts deepen
Mr Wakeman of Springfield leases the Carter estate near Baxter Springs and sinks two ore shafts. One shaft reaches fifteen feet of rich ore. Materials for a mill are purchased and will be erected soon. The Quaker Valley field links Waco Lawton and Picher fields with strikes on Hudson Williams and Jesse Carter land. The Carter heirs are the Carter boys and Archie Bottom.

Home Guards appoints officers after drill session
The Home Guards met in the Chamber of Commerce rooms with 60 members. Captain W. E. Hiatt appointed officers including Raymond Cook as 2nd Lieutenant and Jack Avery as 1st Lieutenant. A pledge of 88.50 was made to buy uniforms. 15 members will supply their own. Membership now 55. 68 needed to muster into state guards. A memorial day sermon by Rev. Orton will be held after a Sunday march to church.

Columbus Kansas May 22 The hearing time for four men and one woman charged as booze haulers arrested Saturday by Sheriff Bob Frazier and Deputies George Corkle and John Moyer has been set for Monday June 3. Joe Podzaosek charged with carrying 10 cases of beer and 28 pints of whiskey and Charles Bigelow and W R Bigelow charged with 19 cases of beer will appear before Justice E R Pattyson. Mary Podhaosek and John Hayes the wounded man are slated to appear before Justice J R Carter June 3. The four were out on bond. no bond for the Pittsburg hospital patient. The wounded man is in critical condition and surgery is not planned. The bullet injured Hayes’s upper back near the spine. Hayes’s car suffered multiple bullet holes and is being repaired in a local garage.
