Record Beaten in Latest Strike at Baxter and Miami Mines

A series of mining strikes near Baxter and Miami report the shallowest and richest ore bodies yet. Lisle Mishler’s ground yields ore at 25 to 26 feet with faces up to 65 feet and assay results near 9 to 20 percent. Additional strikes on adjacent leases, including a 140 feet depth on Agnes Gilmore land, 280 feet on R Moore land, and a 400 ton mill contract, indicate a promising mining district with several firms active. W. R. Kendall of Kansas City attended to interests as major leases change hands.

Patriotic Group Promotes Local Sons of America Division

Baxter residents warm to forming a division of the Patriotic Order of the United Sons of America to teach basic military tactics for men and first aid and Red Cross nursing for women. An organizer is in town for a few days with business and professional leaders aiding the effort. Mr and Mrs C W Bilhart returned home from St Louis by motor then by steam cars, describing a pleasant run until rain.

City Council Mulls Modern Baxter Springs Plans

Baxter Springs council debates a municipal water plant, sewer bonds, and street widenings. Funds approved include 25 dollars to Women's Federated clubs for library park care with future additions. Baxter Springs census shows strong city growth and valuation gains

The 1917 census by Assessor J E Simmons puts Baxter Springs population at 2395, a gain of 561 since last year and about 30 percent. Growth is limited by housing, with 100 more houses needed for instant occupancy. County figures show rising personal property values in Galena and Baxter Springs, with Baxter’s valuation up by 105,808. Mayor Wright notes plans for a municipal water plant or private franchise, and sewer construction plans move forward, with preference for municipal ownership if feasible.

Baxter 1917 Baseball Team Elects Officers

Jas C Page elected manager and Dr W T Hope treasurer at a recent meeting of Baxter athletics supporters. The captain will be chosen this afternoon at the new baseball diamond, three o'clock, five blocks north of the post office. The manager will hire players but no player will be fired by him. a secret committee will approve firings. All interested are urged to attend.

Horse Thief Caught at Bartlett After Melrose Tip

A horse owned by J J Crane of Baxter Springs was stolen Wednesday night. Mrs G H Filby of Melrose identified the suspect after seeing a man driving a horse and buggy toward Chetopa. The thief confessed in Columbus after capture in Bartlett. A companion stole another horse and buggy from Joplin but fled. the buggy was left near Melrose. Baxter Springs plans an amusement park near Spring Creek with bathhouses and picnickers facilities, with a railroad station expected to serve the site.

C. E. Mathews Lumber Co bought a quarter block from Thomas Fruit Co adding to its site and securing space for a warehouse along M. C. G. tracks. The firm plans a distributing point for roofing, doors, sash and lumber with yards in Carterville Century Webb City Quapaw Miami Joplin and nearby. A late night fire at R. F. Gresser’s building caused minor damage a two foot hole in the floor, likely from spontaneous ignition of turpentine soaked rags. no enemy was found and the blaze was quickly extinguished.

Wife Deserter Arrested in Desertion Case

A man was arrested on a wife desertion charge after being found living away from his spouse. Police report the suspect had abandoned his family and was located in a different residence where he was staying with someone.
