Emporia Kan May 20 Degrees and diplomas were awarded to 148 candidates at the fifty third annual session of the Kansas State Normal School this week with more students expected to complete the summer term. Most graduates already have jobs with salaries from 1000 to 1800 for teachers and 800 to 1200 for assistant staff. Mrs C M Harlin and son visit this week at the home of their daughter Mrs Gene Lemons.
Mayor H A Browne reports canvassing land owners for extending a cement road from the State Line of Missouri to Main street and from city limits to Stephenson Graveyard along Seventh Street toward Lowell and Baxter. The petition is filed with county commissioners and may be considered at a future meeting. Browne seeks to open the Peoria road as well.
The Baxter School of Mines begins Monday night with K L Koelker of the Oklahoma Mining Company teaching chemistry. Classes meet Mondays and Thursdays 7:30 to 9:30, tuition free, funded by national and local governments, under the Smith Hughes act.
MM B Phillips of Mt. Vernon Missouri is the weekend guest of his brother.
Senator urges repeal of wartime prohibition on beer and wine and calls for tax revisions. The proposal seeks to abolish manufacturers and retailers excises and to return railroads funds by January first.
Paris May 22 the German peace delegation was given seven days more to reply to the peace terms, extending to May 29. London May 22 the former crown prince Frederick William Hohenzollern faces possible trial under the treaty, and prison camp commanders are likewise liable. Berlin May 22 Germany declines to sign, saying terms spell economic destruction and moral degradation for the nation.
Count Brockdorff-Rantzau remains in Berlin as German protests over the peace terms intensify. Some press favors rejecting the Entente terms, others predict occupation and collapse of the German government, while Vorwarts contemplates a doomed federation and a possible replacement for the German foreign minister.
Chester I. Lang of Wichita says the present congress session will name the next presidential candidates. He expects the Republican majority to decide on ratification of the league of nations and who leads against or with it. Lang favors ratification and predicts Wilson’s possible noncandidacy.
War Department order received by the Army Recruiting Officer at Joplin states that regular army soldiers will be issued spiral loggins. The wrap puttee replaces the old canvas leggings for most units, conforming to leg movement and offering better protection. Mounted troops will retain canvas leggings with leather reinforcement. officers in the field will wear spiral leggings. Colonel F G Knabenshue has requisitioned wrap leggings for district recruiting personnel.
Bt Louis May 20 President Wilson arraigned before Presbyterian church commissioners for urging repeal or amendment of the war time prohibition act. A resolution urged Congress to enforce the law to meet world food needs and preserve national morale. The Rev Hindman and others attacked the president’s stance while attendees applauded. Harold T Wright plans to return to Baxter to establish a home after service.
Memorial Sunday on May 5 will be observed at the Methodist Episcopal church in Baxter Springs. Dr. C L Orton will preach, with cooperation from Presbyterian and Baptist churches. The program will feature a nine member high school orchestra, Methodist choir, and a formal procession of military and veterans groups led by the G A R band and Boy Scouts.
