Baxterites Push for State Aid to Build Missouri Border Route

Baxter and Galena officials pressed for government aid at a Topeka highway meeting. The plan designates a route from the Ryan bridge to the Military road then to Riverton and along the Frisco tract to Baxter Springs, with land donation from John Langston. Baxter leaders formed a five member committee to finalize the route, citing rich ore production and heavy regional travel as justification.

Financiers lease land near Baxter property in city limits

Four 40 acre tracts near L. Hocker and R. O. Thomas were leased to a Springfield Missouri group of financiers led by F. R. Cook. Names include Harry Cooper and H. M. Smith. Drilling started. shafts to follow and mills planned. Oil found 162 feet south of Baxter Springs with ore below surface. land leased from Miami Zinc Syndicate.

Knife Attack near Distillery Leaves Peter Brown Slashed

Peter Brown colored, known for a long police court record, was stabbed on Friday afternoon near the Missouri and Kansas line after refusing a drink. A large colored man in a buggy attacked, escaping into the woods. Brown was taken to a Galena home, Dr. C R Jones treated the wounds, believed to be from a grazer or knife. Brown recalls little of the attacker or exact location, but a recovery is hoped.

Low attendance at opera house program by Prof Von Velde

An Emporia professor Valde presented at the opera house Tuesday night but attendance was lighter than hoped. Miss Helen Humphrey performed a piano solo and a high school chorus delivered a selection from Welad, Sing.

Mineral drilling yields rich ore in Baxter Springs area

Reports from Baxter Springs district describe multiple ore and zinc strikes. Drilling by Miami leaseholders at Scott place, 140 feet, with two mills in progress. Sequoth mine produced three loads of zinc. 105 foot strikes on Ramage and Hartley leases. Meredith group on Qua Paw 185 feet reports richer ore. Walker mine near Picher reveals cavern with lead cubes. 200 foot drift underway. Kitty Mining operates a 850 ton mill between Beaver and Blue Goose. Newell land west of Baxter shows face at 65 feet and 190 feet, with deeper brown limerock at 200 feet. L. C. Haynes Reese and McCane leasehold drilling nearby. Little Brown company reports lead strike at Sunny Side Old Hobo property at 60 feet.

Baxter Springs Plans Drilling on South Land for Ore and Homes

A trio led by A. H. Rogers buys 106 acres south of Baxter Springs and plans ore drilling first. If ore is insufficient, plats will be laid out for sale to ease housing, aided by a Southwest Missouri Railroad line expansion toward Miami and Picher. Scout groups and local builders noted, with Edgecomb constructing a stucco bungalow sold to E. F. Sweeney.

Water Light Changes Hands in Local Sale

The Baxter Electric Light and Water Company plant was sold by E. K. Brown and will pass to new owners at month end. The Empire District company supplied the lighting, and Wilbur B. will control the water plant with funds to expand for current needs and future growth. The price was not publicized, but Brown is satisfied with the sale. A separate report details a gunplay incident near Blue Mound where J. W. Barnes and others were arrested and later released on bail after attempts to sink a shaft and haul away lumber. A building was later erected and torn down on the property, with lumber left on the public highway. The piece also notes a lecture by Prof. Van Der Velde of Emporia College in the opera house last Tuesday.
