A lengthy city council session addressed a range of issues, including involvement with a local fathers organization. Officials discussed funding, events, and community programs, while residents spoke on priorities for youth activities and public services.
City council session records a petition calling for deficit funding to grade gravel and oil about a mile of River street from River hill to the west city limits. Total funds pledged $225. estimated total cost $1,500. Officials note lack of funds prevents city-wide sidewalk and street work despite demand.
The Boyer machine company of Joplin plans a new warehouse and sales room on West River Street near the Frisco line and opposite Murdock hardware, signaling local business growth.
The National Red Cross expects Baxter Springs to raise a per capita city total or between 5000 and 6000 dollars for the drive May 20 to 27. An executive committee will meet at 4 pm Thursday at the Chamber of Commerce rooms to set plans led by Satchet Scott Harvey Brinton McWilliams Cardin Lundgren Kane Grifford. President Wilson proclaims Red Cross Week May 20 1918 urging nationwide support for relief and morale efforts.
Grant Waggoner and Ruth Barnes were married at the J. W. Barnes home with Rev. John Garretson officiating. The couple left for a honeymoon that will span several points, while Waggoner’s future looks bright after a notable career in law and public service.
In a letter received today, H. A. LaRue of Columbus says he has not accepted the presidency of the Cherokee county Council of Defense, though appointed by Governor Capper. The county thus has no county organization. It is expected Fred Veiland, the new state director for this work, will visit soon.
Washington reports nearly one hundred million dollars in back pay to railroad workers and about three hundred million dollars yearly in salary increases if railroad commission recommendations are adopted. Local notes include visits by William Allen and Mrs B Ebling, and a new repair facility erected by Jas Barr and W E Jernigan on Treelfth Street between two railroads. Ed Covey’s sister Mrs Ed Covey visited Baxter Springs while Mr B H Devintendi of Miami was a business visitor Wednesday.
A love quarrel erupted Tuesday night when two girls rode with other boys. A group of youths blocked a car, assaulted occupants, and an ensuing chase led to Buck Smith being sought with the city marshal. Smith eluded capture as the party dispersed in Hocksville.
Rev. John Garretson will deliver the baccalaureate sermon to the Baxter Springs High School graduating class at the Presbyterian church Sunday evening. Seven pupils will graduate this spring: Burton Covey, Lester Jarrett, LeRoy Isbury, Oliver Norman, Helen Dively, Georgia Allen, and Viola Schloeman. Commencement exercises are planned for May 17 at the Library Theater. C. M. Mitchell of the Jalliers Mining Co. went to Joplin to buy machinery. Roy Van Horn moved to Chateau Ave. from R. M. Gilman’s property. The Methodist Aid Society met at Polster hotel. quilting and refreshments followed, with Mrs. Louis assisted by daughters-in-law. Mrs. Louis presented $100 for church fund. About 25–30 members present. Everett Suggs and family visited Cassity neighbors before moving to Oklahoma City. Suggs has mining interests.
