Massive 70 Span Bridge Extends Over River North of Baxter

Reports from Baxter Springs detail a massive reinforced concrete bridge project by Topeka Bridge Company and Midland Bridge of Kansas City. Contractors Chas Slusher and C W Doble oversee a multi-span layout including four 75 foot spans, three 50 foot spans, and ten 50 foot spans across an island. Spurs across Shoal creek and the old mill race add to a river crossing system designed to resist flood waters. Baxter Seeks War Loan Subscriptions in City

Report on the sale of the first issue of war bonds shows Baxter Springs aims to match or exceed any city of similar size. On Saturday the two local banks wired Washington that $50,000 worth of bonds are wanted. When bonds arrive, banks will distribute them to subscribers. Bonds carry three and a half percent interest.

Railway Officials Plan Yard Upgrades At Baxter Springs

General Superintendent G W Humphrey and Chief Engineer Dawson of the M O & G Railway came from Muskogee to arrange side track changes in Baxter Springs yards to handle increased traffic after the boom. They arranged trackage facilities for the Thomas Fruit Co as it builds a large warehouse near the depot and discussed other access and trackage needs for major local business interests seeking entry.

Booze and Gasoline Crash On River Street

Reckless driving blamed for Sunday collision on River street in front of John S. Cooper's house. Faney Rouse allegedly drunk and arrested, bail set at 12 dollars then forfeited. Ford eastbound at high speed struck a Maxwell from Judd Motor Co, causing multiple damages and minor injuries to two children. Ed Clark failed to stop as Studebler hit the Ford after the swoop into the road.

New Four Room School House For Fort Smith Area Next Year

Baxter Springs Board of Education votes to erect a four room frame school on recently purchased southeast town ground to handle a big enrollment rise next year. A permanent eight to ten room building is delayed by bond limits. a larger valuation future bond is planned. The old building will be remodeled, desks ordered, and nine of sixteen teachers already elected led by J. W. Twente as superintendent.

War Time At Home Near Riverton Plant

Citizens glimpse government and corporate cooperation to defend key utilities and national defense plants. Armed sentinels guard Riverton dam and works day and night, with large warning signs for visitors. Two weeks ago fishermen were told to stay away from Lowell dam and Spring river casts. visitors barred yesterday. C Treece is building a prominent two story residence on Sheridan street supervised by Chas Ferris, builder of the former King residence destroyed by fire.

Prospecting and Mine Operations in Baxter Field

On the James Murphy estate two ore-rich holes were drilled with a 192 foot depth in the first and a 190 foot zinc strike near the A. Gritton farm. The Rose Mining company, led by W. C. Collins, took over the Big Squaw property east of Lincolnville and overhauled the 200 ton plant. Wm. Grimes and A. W. Abram sold Sunnyside leases for 25000 dollars to Tulsa buyers, with prior August sale to I. & O. Mining Company.

Drill Cuts Promise Big Value for Blue Mound Mines

Mining firm The Lucky Hunch plans a 300 ton capacity mill south of Hocker residence on Minnie Dawes 80 acre farm. Seventeen holes drilled with 14 rich strikes. Holes reach 120 to 160 feet. Kid Marks Ham is involved. A good strike reported at Baxter Springs. Drilling also underway on Beals land and on Meed land with two drills at work.

Short change plot ends with arrests and releases

Porter Clark Sr and Floyd accuse suspects of short changing. Henry Horton and city marshal seize two men who resist, then release others after questioning. Involved Joplin men Jack Phillip and E D Mason, plus a Commerce doctor story. Steele freed, Horton verifies, others jailed briefly then ordered out by night marshal Eugene Turner.

Early Settlers Found Mineral Here Near Baxter Springs

Mrs. George Peak recalls 1870 lead ore taken from a well on Rev. J L Wright's farm two and three quarter miles southwest of Baxter Springs. Big ore chunks sat on the porch awaiting identification. Ore later found in Galena matched. Rev. Wi had died. discovery caused little mining development.

Walter Apple left town with Galena residents for Topeka to represent Baxter Springs at the State Good Roads Commissioners meeting held today. Earlier notices indicated the state will allot funds to towns for road improvements, and Galena and Baxter Springs sent delegates.
