Reunion plans promise a hammering event this year

Col L C Weldy warns the reunion will be a hammer. The Newsman reports Topeka inquiries about the big reunion and Baxter locals note enhancements by Geo Polster on his property with paint. The Times critiques Kansas City streets with worn asphalt on Main Walnut Grand. Willis & Congdon plan a hay barn for 8 B Apple at Quapaw sized 0x14 feet by 20 feet high to hold 1100 tons. Discovery of gas or oil on Tar creek could benefit Baxter. a gas/oil prospect is anticipated by a Carthage company.

Riveling Gilliam Visits Joplin Friends This Week

Riveling Gilliam of Joplin visited relatives and friends in the city this week. Our old friend George Elliott has been appointed marshal of Gayena and Wednesday he bloomed out in a handsome new blue suit. Mrs Geo L Walker and children left Sunday for Nortonville Kansas where they joined Mr Walker. The price of zinc ores is dropping again and the mining towns are of course gloomy because thereof.

C Lykins of Miami spent the week in town on business. Dr and Mrs C M Jones and Will Jones of Galena visited relatives in Baxter at the start of the week.

Governor and Mrs Samuel J Crawford arrived from Topeka on Sunday and will stay the summer at their farm adjoining the city Joplin’s Main Street is praised as the best lighted thoroughfare in the West.

Rail extension work begins from Miami to Afton

The railway company started grading the extension from Miami to Afton last Monday at Afton. The bridge contractor has shipped in camping outfits and provisions and will employ about fifty teams and many men. The camp sits on the Neosho riverbank near the work.

Galena Smallpox Move Sparks Legal Threats in Kansas

In Galena Kansas E St George Noble moved from the Banke hotel to a home on East Seventh Street near Water after a smallpox diagnosis. Nearby resident C C Sherrod and wife moved ill wife to the Oxford hotel then to 507 Lincoln avenue. Sherrod hires counsel and plans damages suit, while Noble faces potential legal action for moving a contagious case near others. Also notes a highway bridge contract, and a local Modern Woodmen notice.

Rooster with horns attracts town attention in Joplin

J R Short, a farmer two and a half miles southwest of Joplin, parades a common barnyard rooster with three inch horns in town drawing as much notice as the Gentry parade. The bird is shown in a big coop when needed to prove its oddity amid skeptics.
