Public notice warns owners in the district under order No 876 that stock running at large will be disclaimed and costs assessed. The notice requests owners to govern themselves and comply. Signed by A. H. H. W. Woodard, President, and A. K. Osborn, Secretary.
Baxter youngsters enter a federation women’s clubs contest with 61 names booked including Richard, Hazel, Earl, and many others. A five dollar sweepstakes prize is under consideration to reward best garden based on plan, productiveness, beauty, size, cleanliness, blooms, and year over year improvement, potentially raising expenses to 41 dollars if approved. The federation supports the prize if affordable, with awarding date yet to be set.
Last week the Baxter Boosters organized a mining district excursion with a Joplin Commercial Club train of about 200 to 64 stops. The trip to Miami featured a band and grand decorations as members aimed to see the country and foster closer ties among Baxter residents. President McWilans and Mrs Nele Weaver visited Siecle Mel during the outing.
The Federation of Women’s Clubs outlines a three day cleanup campaign starting April 2, urging residents to burn yard debris and haul remaining dirt away at no cost. District captains will coordinate teams, with dumping committees named and new local businesses announced as Baxter eyes growth and river-side improvements.
H C King of Commerce Motor and Supply was slightly injured returning from a booster excursion when his car struck a rock after avoiding a road hog. A load of High School freshmen was aboard. Miss Nona McCrea was injured along with other occupants as both cars suffered heavy damage.
W. E. Hiatt bought the Leader Mercantile Company stock in the Cooper building, becoming sole owner of the store once run by the Cooper estate. Hiatt plans to replenish the stock with new goods and operate the long established Paxter landmark, now under local management. Alvin Newkirk of Wichita will visit Baxter around April 1 to supervise improvements on the M. O. depot area and build one or two houses. Mrs. T. T. McAboy, of Baxter, was elected delegate from the third Kansas district to the Royal Neighbors of America Grand Lodge meeting, traveling with a group to Independence to begin her duties. The article also notes plans for a piano donation and local notices.
