Renewed spring and summer mining activity in the Baxter camp drives optimism as several mines resume operations and others ramp up ore production. The Petersburg mill, Ethel Miller mine, Good Luck, Mason, Sweeney, and Hattonville piles all show progress, with water and pumping issues addressed. A large tabernacle revival led by E J Bulgin is planned, with services anticipated in early spring and a 1200 to 1800 seating capacity structure.
The city shows spring cleanup spirit with rakes, shovels, and trash burning across neighborhoods. Encourages homeowners to improve yards, plant shrubs, seed grass, set trees, and beautify fences, noting low cost and high impact. A second cleanup day is urged, recalling last year’s visible town improvement.
The Knights and Ladies of Security plan an open meeting and box social at the Odd Fellows ball on Thursday evening in March. Everyone is invited to attend and bring a well filled box to share amid sleet disruptions from the prior week that affected the Mutual phone service. Mrs John Strow died at her home in the southeast part of the city on Wednesday morning of last week. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon and interment will follow in Baxter cemetery beside her husband. Mrs Strow was highly regarded and left several grown children.
Consolidated, W. N. Love and W. L. Bradshaw have joined with James Orr, county register, to form a grocery business. Estimates place the door fee near Cooper's at $60 for the Katy Railroad mortgage of $125,000,000. In Jackson County Missouri the fee was about $40 and in Crawford County Kansas the mortgage yielded $70.65. Those familiar say the figures reflect regional variance.
The Kansas legislature passed a law imposing severe penalties for publishing derogatory material about a candidate unless signed and marked Advent. Supporters say the measure will curb mudslinging and character attacks, bringing decency back to politics as journalists often air sharp barbs.
Morris Doty displayed a large homegrown lemon raised at his North Military Street residence. The fruit weighed twenty seven and one half ounces and measured fourteen and one half inches around one way and sixteen and one half inches the other. Doty noted a much smaller lemon the previous year.
