New drilling near Baxter Springs shows daily gains as shafts race to depth and zinc and lead appear in payable quantities. Five drills arrived, the Rialto Mining Co opens a $50,000 mill aiming 500 tons daily. Rich ore shifts expand toward Sambo, Lincolnville, and Treece areas. leases swap hands as Baxter district interest surges.
Baxter Springs prepares for a large Odd Fellows gathering with 2000 to 3000 visitors from Bourbon Crawford and Cherokee counties. Main tasks include food service, entertainment, and a commemorative souvenir program funded by subscriptions and local ads. Local committees, led by J. W. Cook and H. E. Stein, coordinate plans as area lodges mobilize volunteers and automobile drivers to tour mining properties and the town.
Love and Martin of Joplin awarded the contract for a brick block at Main and South streets for C. E. Baker of Carthage. The 75 by 100 foot two story building will hold stores on the first floor and 40 hotel rooms on the second, with fireproof construction and about $15,000 cost. The firm plans a similar 75 foot addition west for 150 feet of store room. Also noted: Fred Bartlett and Doc Fail form a real estate partnership, Fair Bartlett to run Rosenstein offices, Hartley home west of Baxter on Chetopa road burned, fire origin uncertain. Supply Co.
S P Hutchinson and family escaped as their farm residence about 1.75 miles east of Baxter burned Saturday morning at 12 30. The dining room caught fire first, Hutchinson led his wife to safety, then retrieved the children before the floor collapsed. Only a few pieces of furniture survived. the rest was lost. Furniture valued with insurance at 800 dollars. The house was rented and an auction sale had been planned, held Tuesday.
Reopening of the Rex Theatre by Rex Barrett and Roy Brewer of Granby Mo with a new name The Mee. They install floor steel ceiling new seats and interior decorations and plan to feature Triangle films like at the Hippodrama Joplin. Opening day is set for Saturday March 17. Prof J W Twente returned from Kansas City after attending an NAED meeting with a favorable report.
