Voters approve 99 000 for a new Baxter Springs school building and equipment, but turnout is very light with only about one tenth of eligible residents casting ballots. The plan moves two cottage buildings and consolidates to ease overcrowding, with bids to be opened July 25 and construction to begin promptly.
E J Embree, a Baxter night police officer, reported a break in at the O Connell and McGuire grocery and near the National Bank alley. He fired two shots, bricks flew, the thief escaped, and Embree fell into a recent sewer cave in while pursuing.
Three large contingents will depart this month to camps. The operation involves 169 men assembled from current units for training and relocation. Officials note readiness and logistics are coordinated with regional depots and transport services.
Federal Food Administrator Walter Innes announces immediate rules restricting sugar sales to town customers to two pounds at a time and five pounds to rural buyers. Certificates for canning sugar are limited to twenty five pounds. Harvest crews may buy sugar and flour in fifteen day quantities with county permit.
