Obituary of John W McKenzie in Baxter Springs

John W McKenzie born March 31 1843 in Harrison county Indiana died July 20 1915 aged 72 years 3 months 19 days He moved to Boone county Indiana in 1861 enlisted in the 10th Indiana Volunteers served three years He married Malona Miller November 9 1865 and had four children Bonnie Holmes Annie Hutchings and Darius McKenzie one died in infancy He came to Kansas in 1883 lived on a farm north of Baxter then in Baxter Springs He joined the Christian church in 1869 helped erect the Christian church building in Baxter Springs He leaves his widow one son and two daughters three sisters Mary McKenzie Lucy McKenzie Oklahoma Mary Watkins Oklahoma and a niece in Indiana with grandchildren at his bedside Funeral at the Christian church Thursday at 2 pm G A R will conduct the obsequies

A stalk brought to the office by B W Patton stands fourteen and a half feet tall with two perfect ears and a potential third. From Sam King’s patch, the plant grew nine feet three inches to the ear, towering above a typical house. King, who once tilled the garden, now shares a tale tied to his Kansas roots as the patch yields small crops across under forty acres.
