Man's Own Nerve Saves Four Les at Naylor Mine
The hoisterman at the Naylor mine eight miles west of Baxter Springs lost his right hand forefinger by preventing a larger blast as more men were hoisted from the mine after a dynamite fuse was lighted. He was taken home to Galena. his actions saved four workers. The mine is owned by U S Smelting Co. After guiding men to safety, he rode in a Studebaker toward Galena, but the car skidded and overturned near Baxter Springs. no one else was hurt. The hoisterman remained conscious and was later transported home.
