Baxter Springs faces a potential gas price rise as residents resist higher rates. The piece notes city councils in Carthage and nearby towns adopting 25c per thousand gas with pressure thresholds, while locals in Baxter Springs and Joplin oppose any increases. The News vows to oppose price hikes.
A burglary occurred last Sunday night at McAboy & Co cheat market with $5.70 taken from the cash register. Marshal Horton quickly arrested Tom Martin, 17, of Perry, Oklahoma, who will be tried in district court for burglary.
On Friday January 31 S J Toovey will auction five miles west and one mile south of Baxter Springs starting at 10 o clock. Items include five horses 14 cattle a registered duroc boar farm implements household goods and fruit with eight months credit. Auctioneer H L Wilbur clerk Don Wills. Winner served on grounds. Grant Waggoner had business in Topeka this week.
Missouri Oklahoma and Gulf railway officials announce a February 2 start with daily service from Joplin via Frisco and Missouri Pacific tracks. Through passenger train to Denison Texas and three motor cars between Joplin and Miami Oklahoma along with a Red Bull and a local freight train. Frisco tracks used temporarily between Joplin and Baxter Springs with the M O G line to Denison continuing. The line traverses a fertile Oklahoma region and officials anticipate more through trains after full Joplin entry.
Rumor says Missouri Pacific will extend from Topeka to Pittsburg in spring, linking Joplin and Pittsburg with a Gulf of Mexico route via Baxter. A new Topeka station marks progress and a big carload Ford shipment may arrive any day. Automobiles captivate buyers, with Ford dominating 1912 sales.
The Baxter State Bank and Baxter National announce their boards the year. Officers named include President John M Cooper Vice President L M Perkins Cashier W W Wyatt and Assistant Cashier J J Cooper. Local items note births arrivals and new equipment promotions while Hood's advertises three wheel manure spreaders and Arctic Radiator Fluid plus John Deere implements arriving for farm work and depot track updates in Joplin Baxter Springs and Miami.
