A major blaze swept a block on the east side of Main Street between Fifth and Sixth last Thursday, threatening many structures. Fire crews battled the flames as smoke darkened the sky and residents watched anxiously, fearing extensive damage before the fire was controlled.

Grandma Rachel Sparlin, about eighty and blind, burned to death Wednesday night when her smoking pipe ignited her clothing. Found alone at home in Baxter Springs, she screamed for help as flames consumed her garments. She died several hours later. She leaves three grown children, C. C. Sparlin, Mrs. Geo Bardin of Baxter Springs, and Mrs. Julia Rhodes of Joplin. Born May 7, 1827 in Lee County Virginia, she moved with her family to Missouri, married Jonathan Sparlin, and lived near Seneca before relocating here. Funeral held at C. C. Sparlin’s home and interment at Andrew Sparlin cemetery near Seneca.
The Baxter National Bank has elected A. R. Kane J. J. Fribley F. S. Hall J. N. Rogers T. J. Morrow Geo. E. Rucker to the board. Directors met last Saturday night and elected A. R. Kane as President J. J. Fribley as Vice President J. B. Hall as Cashier F. L. Brewster as Assistant Cashier.
