Farmers Institute organizers announce a Thursday January 23 meeting in the city. The program promises interest for business farmers and men and women alike, with discussions and Q&A to share enthusiasm and helpful information. Remember the date January 23.
The Lyceum course third number offers a Monday evening program on January 20, 1913 at the Opera House by a trio of artists Miss Pettit violin Miss Lewis reader and Miss Maupin singer plus ensemble numbers and a playlet. Single tickets for 50c available at Grantham's for season ticket holders and others.
A speaker urges a young man to quit swearing noting the habit harms a person’s respect. He emphasizes that most men do not swear as much as imagined, calls swearing vicious and worthless, and urges immediate cessation.
I R Gaba an old city resident died at his Grant street home last Wednesday morning from heart disease. He was father to A T Gaba of this city, with other children living in Ohio Colorado and Indiana. Funeral services were held in the afternoon and interment followed at Baxter cemetery.

The Mines report zinc ore production fell about one third last week due to a severe storm and power troubles, but base prices for blende stayed firm with top bids at 56 and many lots sold around 55 to 55.50 for high grade ore. Lead and calamine prices showed little change while shipments declined across the Missouri Kansas Oklahoma field. Local mines such as Sweeney Last Chance and Emma Gordon plan mills, with Big Jack leased and Linley set to restart operations as weather improves.

Governor Hodges was sworn in at noon Monday with Chief Justice Johnson administering the oath. All newly elected state officers were inducted into office on the same day, marking the start of their terms.

The Hood Implement Co continues growth by purchasing the Bigham implement business at Miami, bringing its total to eight stores. Existing locations include Baxter Springs, Miami, Columbus, Pittsburg, Edna, McCune, Parsons, and Carthage.
The Odd Fellows and Rebekahs held a joint installation of new officers in the Odd Fellows hall with Deputy Grand Master J. W. Cook presiding. Speeches followed by musical numbers and a banquet, featuring Miss Gertrude Dowty and Mrs. Ruby Harmon, marked a well attended evening. Officers installed included E. C. Hodson as Noble Grand and Ida Simmons as N G among others.
Eldon Button found a saddle stolen from J M Duff of Mi ami at a reunion. Duff identified the saddle and rewarded Eldon with five dollars. The slicker and blanket were recovered nearby, but the saddle was not found until the discovery. The saddle showed weather wear but was undamaged otherwise.
