Chanute Spelter Co Opens New Shaft Near Baxter Springs
Chanute Spelter Company starts two shafts a quarter mile west of Baxter Springs in the Kansas-Oklahoma zinc and lead field. The project uses a Texas pump and Pomona pumps to drain the mine. Hartley and Ebenstein properties show strong ore potential with several wells, pumps, and a 750 ton capacity mill ready to expand.

The Federal Mining and Smelting Company now holds a majority of the Lucky O K mine and full Brewster lease ownership near Hockerville, three miles southwest of Baxter Springs. Transfers, recorded this year, align two high officials with the properties. The Lucky O K Mine now operates a 500 ton mill and a Brewster lease mill is being built. Drunks disrupt Mt Hope school scene near Baxter Springs
Three men J F Scrum Ernest Doll and Elmer Freeman caused a disturbance at Mt Hope school between Baxter Springs and Blue Mound on Tuesday. Freeman paid a 15 cent fine while the others await transport to county jail after conviction in Justice Jones court. The trio stalled their car after leaving the school as teacher summoned help from Baxter.

Retention of War Schools Urged by War Secretary
Secretary of War Baker told the Senate Military Affairs Committee on January 7 that permanent peace time maintenance of the large artillery, machine gun and rifle training schools at Fayetteville North Carolina Columbus Georgia and West Point Kentucky is necessary.
