FTY YEARS OF MARRIED LIFE FTY YEARS OF MARRIED LIFE
The fiftieth anniversary of the wedding of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Fribley was celebrated New Year s day at their home on Main street. About two hundred guests called during 2 to 5 o clock, including friends and neighbors, many tied to Baxter Springs for over a quarter century. The reception was a surprise, arranged by their son and daughter Charles Fribley of Miami. Out of town guests included Charles Fribley and sons James Wood and Robert and daughters Lala and Alma of Miami, Ed Fribley of Joplin, Tra C Perkins and FR Morgan and sons Robert and Richard of Galena. Among gifts was an Edison cabinet phonograph from their son and daughter. Mary Alma Johnson and James J. Fribley were married at Ulrichville, C. Two children were born there, Charles in Miami and Edward director of the orchestra at the Club Theatre in Joplin. In 1882 the family came to Baxter Springs. Fribley engaged in sheep, then cattle in western Kansas. He later ran hardware and implement stores with his son Charles in Baxter for years. About sixteen years ago they sold out and Charles moved to Miami. The Fribleys have long been active in Baxter s social and municipal life, with many warm friends congratulating them on fifty years of married life.

First Baxter Boy Falls In France War
Wm. E. Hancock of Baxter Springs who enlisted early last spring in the army was killed in a battle in France some time last month. Hancock was among the first Baxter boys to enlist and worked in a Baxter barber shop. Miss Ruth Ford is clerking in Pages drug store.

Dr Staal Haskett Wounded in Europe Hospitalized in New York
Mrs Ben Patton of this city received word that Dr Staal E B Haskett formerly of Baxter Springs and son of Mr and Mrs J C Haskett now of Oklahoma City was wounded when a shell hit a hospital in England during a German air raid. He is in a New York hospital with grave injuries. his wife is at his side.

Baxter to vote on city manager election
Secretary Mariner acting for the Chamber of Commerce filed again with City Clerk O M Spratt the petition for a vote on Baxter Springs city managership. The filing, previously made in November, was deferred and withdrawn to refile after the new year under a 60 day window. Mayor Wright may call the election, date to be set later to allow voters to study the proposal.
