City Eyes Bid for Deep Water Wells and Casing

A Chanute, Kansas telegram urged cheap second hand syrell casing as the city council planned 10 day ads for drilling two deep water wells and their casing. City to build 100 blocks of Baxter sidewalks

City Engineer A C Terrill reports Baxter Springs has 207 blocks of sidewalks built and 100 more ordered. Contractors seek 12.5 to 16 cents per foot for six miles of walks, with extra for fills or cuts. Officials consider funding by street or by contract type to avoid penalties and speed completion.

Chamber of Commerce Letter At Baxter Springs Meeting

A Baxter Springs city council adjourned session reviewed a Chamber of Commerce communication. The panel praised the mayor on Empire Electric but the matter was already settled. It favored Rogers Line stopping at crossings and dimming night lights. council instructed the city attorney to draft such an ordinance. An earlier meeting had already passed a streetcar speed ordinance.

Home Guards Invite Other Units to Carnival at Library Park

The Baxter Springs Home Guards plan a Tuesday night carnival at Library Park to raise funds for uniforms and stage a festive program. Highlights include ice cream, music, dancing, doll racks, and a “Swat the Kaiser” skit with a girls drill team inviting nearby guard companies, especially Columbus and Galena, to join and enjoy the event.

Picher Youth Roy Brown Killed in France in 1918

A Picher Okla report confirms Roy Brown, 18, son of Charles Brown, died in the Marne trenches during World War I. Roy enlisted in 1926, served with Pershing's forces, and was noted as tall for his age. His Navy brother Omar, aboard the Pennsylvania, was also mentioned. Surprise 62nd Birthday Reception For Rev Popplewell

About sixty people attended a class reception for Reverend Thomas H. Popplewell at the tabernacle on Wednesday evening to celebrate his sixty second birthday. The Men's Sunday School class organized the event and provided a suitable gift, dusting debt with the women’s class after a past contest.

First Junk Violation Fine Under New Baxter Ordinance

L D Biddick of Baxter Springs paid a 10 dollar fine with 4.50 costs in police court for violating the newly enacted junk buying ordinance. The measure requires a license tax of 100 dollars per year, paid in advance, making this the first prosecution under the city council’s new rule. J D Treece came home Wednesday evening after several days with his father at Blue Mound Kansas. He passed through Topeka and toured the new state house. He notes most areas report good corn yields though a few fields are burned up.

Silo Trip Promotes Baxter Boosters Meets County Officials

Two auto loads of Baxter boosters led by Lee and Cord Sarchet started a silo boosting trip to Crestline and other towns. They met county demonstrator E. J. Willis and dairy specialist W. S. Peterson, but Willis reportedly held a separate meeting elsewhere and left the Baxters to pursue their program, prompting questions about his object and schedule changes.
