Kansas Poll Tax Law Sparks Opposition in Kansas Cities

A late Kansas legislature enacted a poll tax requiring every male aged 21 to 60 to pay $4. In Baxter Springs Marshal Horton collected $3 from eligible men and served notices on nonpayers. Thayer Held Over in Grand Larceny Case

Orley J Thayer a local ball player was jailed after a charge of grand larceny with a prior draft quota relate claim. He was fined 15 dollars costs paroled to raise money then jailed again on complaint by Neikirk for allegedly selling two drill bits valued at 90 dollars. Thayer’s hearing was set for August 10.

Baxter Red Cross Fund Over $6,000

Baxter Springs residents closed the Red Cross subscription drive with near six thousand dollars raised. Killed by an Automobile in Joplin Death of Mrs Louisa Denton

Mrs Louisa Denton age 66 died in Joplin on Monday from injuries after being struck by an automobile. She was crossing the pavement when hit and died as the ambulance arrived at St Johns Hospital. Funeral services were held at her home at 2 p m Wednesday conducted by Lou Love of the community.

Mundis and Ash Guilty in Bone Dry Law Case

Carl Mundis and Bert Ash pled guilty before Judge English for violating the bone dry law. Each man received a $200 fine six months in jail and trial costs. Two pint beer bottles and a whiskey bottle were found in the car. Mundis and Ashbaugh claimed liquor belonged to two other men who rode with them. The sheriff found only two in the vehicle and the fate of the other two is unknown. Both men work in Coffeyville Kansas. The arrest occurred Tuesday as they drove from Baxter Springs toward Galena in a drunken state on the wrong side of the road nearly colliding with the sheriff’s car.
