Diversion of Road Money Penalized Across States
The Department of Agriculture withdrew 259,009 from federal highway funds for New Jersey for the year ending June 1937 due to excessive diversions of road revenues to non highway uses. Congress guards road funds, penalizing states diverting motor taxes beyond legal limits, with New Jersey facing potential loss of up to 9,000,000 if diversions continue. Maine shows strong anti diversion measures, while several states faced warnings and policy revisions to avoid losing federal aid.
