Fliers Drop Down in Kennebec Due to Fog
Four World War II era aviators returning from a Labrador and Newfoundland geological and photographic survey flew low over the Kennebec due to dense fog. The Fairchild seaplane landed at Pinson's Landing near Bath on Monday afternoon after a journey that began in Quebec and included stops at Seven Islands and St. Johns. The crew, led by Capt. Hubbard, included Major Averrill, Dr. Goranson, and Ensign Allen, with Lieut. Parker acting as pilot until Allen joined as pilot in mid summer. The expedition, tied to Princeton University geology and Labrador mining interests, logged about 13,500 miles and 135 hours that season. The crew shared plans varying from a world flight to a West Coast trip, and amused themselves with cribbage during a brief Bath stay.
