Bogota Poised for All Rail Link to Pacific Coast
Colombia’s capital Bogota, perched high in the Andes, has long relied on river routes to the Atlantic. A new 128 kilometer railroad and a 3.5 kilometer tunnel will connect eastern and western lines to Buena Vista, finally linking the Pacific coast rail to the mountain capital within an estimated three to five years. Founded in the colonial era as Santa Fe de Bogota, the city now hosts about 200000 residents and previously depended on mule and horse transport to the Magdalena river with a 1909 100 mile line to Girardot completing the inland network.

Rails to link Bogota with sea unlocks Andean transport
The planned Bogota to the Magdalena corridor, begun from Buena Ventura, aimed to connect the capital with the sea by crossing the eastern and central Andes. While early optimism followed an overseas loan and bids, droughts and riverbed gaps delayed progress. The Ibague Armenia extension and a tunnel promise work for mule drivers and freight as Colombia’s 1927 rail network remained small at 2,377 kilometers in a 476,916 square mile nation.
