Mysterious Visitors Hover Over Flag Island Plot
Two well dressed men visited Foster's Point seeking passage to Flag Island off New Meadows. They lingered from two to six pm, evasive about their purpose, later boarded the Boston boat after a failed attempt to hire a ride to the island. Police suspect espionage given Flag Island’s reported military use and Admiral Peary's offer to cede it for a flying station.

In Memory of Sea Heroes Memorial Day Tribute Originated in California
Mrs. Armitage S. C. Forbes of South Pasadena started a Memorial Day custom of strewing flowers on the waters to honor Civil War naval dead. She sent cards to California teachers on May 18 1900 and drew wide support from officials and the Navy. The program spread via the Ladies Naval Veterans, Sons of Veterans, and the Woman's Relief Corps and Daughters of Veterans. Forbes was named an honorary member of the Association of Naval Veterans and presides over a California reform group. The article also notes the North Dakota battleship needs new turbine engines after reserve status in Philadelphia. The ship cost nearly six million dollars and was launched in 1910. The last roses bloom as pond lilies are picked.
