Richmond Sailor Tallman Saw Civil War and Spanish War Service
Charles E. Tallman of Richmond, a lifelong sailor born March 14, 1842, served in the Civil War and the Spanish American War. He joined the 19th Maine in 1864, then the navy, serving on the Bienville, Richmond, and Estrella amid Gulf blockades and Mobile Bay actions. Tallman later cruised the Caribbean, earned a reputation as a skilled weather forecaster, and taught flag etiquette after presenting new flags to Richmond schools.
