Overseers Report Shows City Farm Savings and Costs
At the September meeting the Overseers of the Poor presented a report by Superintendent Sidney L. Eaton. August 1927 expenditures at the City farm were $274.65 with credits of $152.22, showing a net improvement over August 1926. Total department expenditures through Aug. 31, 1927 ran $9,030.28 with about $500 in wood on hand for winter. last year this period was $15,590.40, indicating a substantial saving. The board approved one clothing request for school and expressed confidence the year will end within appropriation, though the city faces a potential deficit. Currently 2 adults and 20 children receive aid, with 14 adults over 65. The board is considering closing the City farm and housing inmates elsewhere to cut costs, noting needs for heating and a women’s bath. Many elderly recipients feel insulted by being refused aid, though care at the City farm could be more economical.

Woolwich Bridge Reconstruction Under Heavy Construction
Woolwich hosts active McClintic Marshall Co. work on the Kennebec bridge approach. A large travelling crane operates at the end of the span with another on the approach to place steel. Maine Central crews grade and lay new track to the end of the bridge and mark lines for a depot foundation on the old Arrowsic road site. The old depot is moved to the Sasanoa river for new foundations. A Maine Central car serves as the station while Lothrop Shea Co. completes work and moves steam shovels to the yard for shipment.
