Bangor Theological Seminary’s Roots in Sheepscot Village
The Bangor Theological Seminary began as the Maine Charity School, founded by parishioners of Sheepscot Village between Wiscasset and Newcastle. In 1852 Deacon George A. Thatcher attended a meeting and the church contributed about $500 toward two professorships. The effort started from Mrs. Bailey and Rev. Kiah Bailey, with help from Father Sawyer of Boothbay, shaping the early “School of the Prophets” that sent many ministers to preach. The initial funds were raised by Mrs. Bailey from Newcastle church members, with Rev. J. W. Ellingwood of Bath noted in church records.
