Nathan A Cushman continues expanding Sebasco Estates in Maine as crews erect a larger building between the dining room and the golf cove. White Cross work for Dr. Richard Baker Burma was done as Far and Near Missionary Society of Corliss Street church held an all day Fall meeting. Papers by Mrs. William A. Hill on the Madras Conference in India and the Baptist World Alliance Congress in Athens. Mrs. Chaney led devotionals with dinner served by Mrs. Cheney. Next meeting Oct 20 with love bags opening. hosts Mrs. Henry Cooper and Mrs. Hill. Attendees listed include Mrs. Preble and Rev. Frederick P. Moffatt among others.
Mr. and Mrs. Edward A. Widen of Collingsville Conn. toured Maine and enjoyed a sunset from Cadillac Mountain Tuesday. They returned Wednesday after a second visit. Mr. Widen has long worked for Collins Co. hardware, maker of tools axes machetes and plows shipped worldwide. The firm, based near Hartford, is among the oldest manufacturers, over a century in business.
Tickets are on sale at A. Hallet & Co for Thursday evening's Collins Festival presentation at Morse High School Auditorium. Sponsored by North Center and South End PTAs for the Bath public schools dental clinic for younger students. Tickets may also be bought from Mrs Louis A Dole or Mrs Alfred E Carpenter. The nine o'clock program kicks off four Thursday shows for this charitable effort.
To relieve third grade crowding in the city center an overflow room will be opened in Room E at Morse High School. Enrollment rose this week from 1815 to 1840, with Morse at 553 and elementary schools at 1263. Stanley Perkins of Popham Beach joined Morse freshman class living with Mr and Mrs Spinney.
Nineteen of twenty two teachers from School Union 48 held a full day session at Sagadahoc Ferry school house Woolwich with Superintendent John Carter. They discussed improving lectures and methods while focusing on time management and health work in the schools. A Good Will Club lunch followed and notices announced future meetings for Phippsburg Arrowsic Georgetown and Woolwich areas.
Mrs Walter M Hill reported as a delegate from the Bangor Convention to open the season after a summer recess. The resignation of Mrs John Costain as president was accepted. A joint meeting with the Post was held Sept 20. New members admitted. a covered dish supper planned for Sept 27 at 6 30. Third District Council meeting set for Sept 16 at 1 30 p m in Waldoboro Legion Hall.
Miss Roberta Manson hosts a miscellaneous shower at her parents home in Dromore with about 40 friends. The event honors her upcoming marriage to Duncan Farrell, set for early fall. Notables include Mrs. Raymond Campbell and Mrs. Walter McCourt among many guests.
The National Cash Register Co exhibits new World’s Fair model registers at the Sedgwick Hotel in Bath. J L Hawkes leads the display with Paul Kuhlenkamp providing mechanical service. Visitors receive the book Better Retailing free of charge.
Dissatisfaction voiced over new registration fees enacted this year at the State Teachers convention. Fees start at $2 and up based on individual wages, replacing the previous standing $1 for women and $2 for men. The change followed last year’s business session which decided to hire a full-time secretary for the association.
A Morse High School letter from Principal Horace P. Herrick urges freshmen parents to stress regular attendance, honest preparation, and honesty with others as core citizenship objectives. He cites two hours daily outside study, balanced health, and avoidance of deceit, noting pupils are generally honest but may bend their conscience under pressure.
The Ribboners met after summer recess at Miss Lois E. Palmer’s 704 High street to plan a silver tea on Sept 26 for Frances E. Willard centenary with proceeds to the Educational fund. Nominating and refreshment committees were formed and delegates named for the State Convention in Augusta Oct 26 27. President Nella Stover presided as prayers and hymns opened and closed the session.
Transfers recorded in the last two weeks include Charles W. Plant to Wallace S. Reed on High street and George W. Robinson to Ernestine H. Erskine on Middle street. Other deeds list buyers and properties on Washington, Middle, and various streets, with several land and building transfers across towns including Bowdoinham Topsham West Bath Woolwich and surrounding figures.
Harry H. Hill an 85 year old retired engineer from Malden Mass visits Bath to recall life here leaving in 1872. He mentions Oscar Williams Bath’s street commissioner who urged him to return and pass his last days, noting changes like a new bridge city hall and high school while missing the Sagadahock House. He traveled with his stepson and a friend for a brief tour before returning to Massachusetts.
Bath Fire Department credited for saving Wing farm buildings on Wing farm near West Bath after a chimney fire prompted Engine 3 and Central station truck to respond. Chemicals from large and small tanks helped extinguish flames with little damage. farm owner Harold B Wing and Woodbridge operators were affected but recovering.
A. K. Philbrick of Alna, a University of Chicago graduate, is in Bath to survey the architecture of its famous old houses. He aims to map the general architectural type by period, noting coastal seafaring dwellings versus farming or textile community homes. Philbrick, pursuing an M A degree, has traveled Maine extensively gathering data for a statewide architectural profile.
Sea and Shore Fisheries Commissioner Arthur R Greenleaf warns that extensive foreign registry seining in the Gulf of Maine could rapidly exhaust herring supplies. Five trawlers reportedly active. if scale grows, Maine fishing industry faces serious harm and possible action with Canada and federal governments. Sardine packers and fish dealers back investigation.
Robert Edwards a 3-year-old son of Mrs Ruth Edwards of 18 Tallman Street was hit in front of his home by a Cyr's Market grocery truck driven by Lewis J Miller. He suffered two broken ribs and head cuts and was transported to Memorial Hospital for X rays.
Construction Foreman E M Glencross and linemen D H McCarthy and Raymond Ellingwood, with R A Whalen and Clarence Whitney from Waterville, ran one half mile of wire and installed the telephone at the Fendler cottage Newport. The system was in operation three hours and forty five minutes after notification.
North Center P T A partners with South End Pioneer to bring the Collins Entertainment Festival to Bath. Four first class programs will be at Morse High School on Sept 26 Oct 5 and Oct 12. Season tickets encouraged with contact via Mrs Louis A Dole.
Sagadahoc Rod Gun Skeet Association opposes a 5 day pheasant open season in Sagadahoc County this Fall. President William T. Donnell conveyed the group’s view to Game Commissioner George J. Stobie after a conference. A Thursday meeting favored continuing restrictions citing near total destruction of pheasants released in prior years. a minority urged another 5 day season due to winter survival concerns.
Mrs. Ruth W. Henry returned home after a three week period away for medical care. Her condition and exact diagnosis are not stated, but relatives report she is resting comfortably at home.

St Barnabas Guild for Nurses resumed meetings after a Summer recess at Grace church parish house. Members spoke three minutes each on their best vacation day. an auction is planned for Oct 5 with Miss Mary F. Gibbons in charge and refreshments by Mrs Haggett, Mrs Brown, and Mrs Henry. A fall card party is also planned with Mrs McFadden in charge and refreshment duties by Mrs Rogers and Mrs Brown.
The Junior Club Garret elected Miss Bar as winner with Miss June Varney and Miss Abby McCabe serving on the executive committee. They voted to host a party Monday at 7:30 for members transitioning to the senior club. Next Nurses Alumnae meeting set for Oct 10.
