New England Dogfish Invasion Grows More Destructive
New England coast fishermen say the dogfish pest has acclimated and now appears earlier and stays longer each season. The species preys on mackerel herring and other schooling fish, attacks nets, and devastates catches. Losses on the coast reach about half a million dollars annually as dogfish swarm trawls and seines. Attempts to curb them included rendering works and bounties, but no large-scale extermination has occurred.
