Four gunners fined for violating law in Merrymeeting Day
Four men charged with hunting after sundown on Merrymeeting Day received the minimum $10 fine and $9.35 costs from Judge John J. Keegan. Chief Warden Smallwood of Rockland brought the defendants from Rhode Island and Woolwich, who admitted firing one shot after dark to relieve a crippled duck. The ruling called it not willful, and fines were remitted upon payment of costs. Wardens report checking over 300 birds shot Tuesday and praised the effort to enforce lawful hours without harassing gunners.
