Florida Pecan Industry Built by Curtis Pioneering Work
Dr J B Curtis of Orange Heights is credited as father of Florida pecan culture in central Florida. After early seedling failures and orange-citrus losses from freezes, Curtis promoted grafted and budded pecans, developed named varieties like Hume Kennedy Randall and Curtis, and led a shift from citrus to pecan groves. His effort spurred widespread planting and brought economic gains to the state.
